I also neglected to mention Henze's "Venus & Adonis" and Holst's "The Planets." Venus also appears in Ligeti's absurdist opera, "La Grand Macabre" (which has an astronomer named Astradamors, for inquiring minds).
Cheers,
ScottScott Williamsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10847565610009226201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-998919302182759604.post-18019932341889018892012-06-04T22:18:45.986-04:002012-06-04T22:18:45.986-04:00Scott, this is in incredible essay!

The only thing I think you've glossed over is the humor in the bile. It's there not to coat the bile and make it go down easier, but is rather an integral tool to convey it. However, I suspect that the humor comes across clearer in the original German, though you do get major doses in the translations as well.Romanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15393840710011408754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-998919302182759604.post-80753455156521872282011-05-02T08:50:37.300-04:002011-05-02T08:50:37.300-04:00How important is divine dissatisfaction, lest we c...How important is divine dissatisfaction, lest we cease to strive.
Thank you for this post.karihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14007215321093415529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-998919302182759604.post-21725729152973241172011-04-15T19:23:15.770-04:002011-04-15T19:23:15.770-04:00I enjoyed your musings on Bach, Montaigne & ro...I enjoyed your musings on Bach, Montaigne & rock climbing.

NeilNeil Wilsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-998919302182759604.post-36077238615275890642011-02-18T02:47:17.551-05:002011-02-18T02:47:17.551-05:00Scott,

I lost touch with him and found him again on FB only to delete him by mistake a few days before he passed. My new friend request will forever be waiting for his reply. It was nothing short of magical for me to experience, even though I've sung the work dozens of times.

He is right that Andrew Megill is not only one of the best musicians working today, but I can also personally attest that he is among the most personable and gracious human beings I know. The Masterwork Orchestra is also a joy to collaborate with. It is my belief that they are the best baroque orchestra in New York (yes, better than the Philharmonic for this style of music).

The four soloists this year were oustanding. My daughter (a collegiate musician with a deft ear) specifically commented on Amy's amazing cadenza in "who may abide"; it was also a magical moment. And I was drawn to rapt attentiveness by Patricia's "despised", a special treat for someone like me (who has snoozed through dozens of uninspired renderings). The final "spitting" lines were almost whispered, but no one in Carnegie had difficulty hearing, as (if like me) they were on the edge of their chairs.

Scott left out one of the most crucial points of the night, however, perhaps from humility. It must be noted that he set the tone for the evening by grabbing everyone's attention early with "Comfort Ye"...another make-it-or-break-it moment which lets the audience know if it's going to be a magical night, or merely a long one. Scott ably signaled it was to be the former, and it was.

Thanks, Scott, for such a wonderful and articulate description. I hope you and Amy have a wonderful 2010.

Andy Walsh
The Masterwork Chorus
www.masterwork.orgAndrew Walshnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-998919302182759604.post-47874363326039698082010-01-01T14:24:16.035-05:002010-01-01T14:24:16.035-05:00Scott, thanks so much for all your kind words.
